My name is Karin Larrave, and I am a financial representative with Northwestern Mutual. Five years ago, I had the opportunity to get involved with HELPS International, and since then, it has become a very important part of my life and my family's life. In 2007, I had the opportunity to travel to Guatemala with a HELPS team to help with the installation of the ONIL stoves in the town of Santa Avelina. During my trip, I was amazed at how something so small and simple, like an efficient stove, can drastically change the lives of people in need. After I experienced HELPS' motto, "Changing Lives" first hand, I was thoroughly compelled to become more involved with HELPS International. It has been my honor and privilege to serve as one of the main sponsors for HELPS' fundraising events over the past 5 years. As a woman born in Guatemala, raised in Mexico City, and now a U.S. citizen, I truly believe that the strongest people in society have an obligation to help those weaker and less fortunate. I strive to live this out in my everyday life, especially in my business. Dr. Pedro Franco once said to me, "The reason I work with you as opposed to anybody else in the financial industry is because you show me that you care first." Comments like these remind me that I am in this world in order to help others to the best of my ability. The people and the mission of HELPS International enable me to pursue this goal. I am thankful for the opportunity to contribute to the medical missions and various other programs of HELPS International by being a sponsor. I strongly encourage doctors, business owners, and high school students alike to get involved in any way possible. Being a sponsor, volunteering for a medical or a stove team, or attending the fundraising events are all great ways to get involved and make a difference. It is a joy to be a part of what HELPS is doing in Latin America. I have loved every second of it and I look forward to future years!
